Memory: I remember taking a walk with my brother-in-law early one morning. We both wanted to explore, so we decided to take a walk that morning while most of the family slept. He had been to the Fort many times, it was my first trip, so I was eager to see it. We made our way up and I was promptly greeted by the landmarks of the beautiful place. I remember feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude and intricacy of the structures. Had people roamed these halls? Had a watchman stood at that lookout? I was amazed. My brother went around, telling me about memories he had there as a child with my husband and their cousins. Playing, hiding, scaring each other. Fort Worden was a huge part of their past. For me, it was less playful. It conjured up images of scared men–no, kids–waiting there for the enemy to strike. I imagined the long nights, on guard, waiting.
I talked about these things as we walked, and moved on to the awesome wonder of the architecture. We covered a lot of topics that day, and it will forever be in my mind as a really beautiful time of thought and conversation in a place I will never forget.
